Fun Stuff at Home with Somers Library

This summer's theme, Imagine Your Story,  brings the magic of fairy tales, mythology, folktales and fantasy from our library to your home. This is a great time to brush up on old stories about Rip Van Winkle and Paul Bunyon, explore legends of knights and dragons, read new tales from other countries, or write your own family's story.

Here are some activities based on some of our favorite tales.

Princess and the Pea

Lay some cushions, mats and different pillows around the room and under some of them place tennis, golf, or other small balls. Players must each sit on a cushion and decide whether there is a pea or not. If they are correct they stay in for the next round. If they are incorrect are they out. While players close their eyes, reset the balls and the cushions for each round.

Jack and the Beanstalk Treasure Hunt

Hide some "treasures" from the story throughout your house or yard, choosing one that would be the magical treasure. Challenge players to find them along with the one special treasure that will save them from the Giant.

Build a Lego Castle

Divide into teams and give each team an equal amount of Lego blocks. Set a time limit to see what castles they can build within that time. Add a challenge with different categories – biggest, most creative, most fun castle etc.

We have a large collection of fairy tales, mythology, and more available at the Somers Library.

Go to our website to search the catalog and place an order for curbside pick-up.

These titles and more are also available on Overdrive and hoopla.
