Memories as a Student Athlete
My most memorable moment as a student-athlete was my spring break trip to Texas my freshmen year. Not only was it a great time to bond with my teammates and play teams from there, but also to see how much the game of lacrosse has grown to other areas of the country.
I never could have imagined that my senior would end up the way it did with everything going on in the world, but it made me realize how much Oneonta really means to me. Four years ago, stepping onto campus here, I never would have thought how attached I'd become to this place. Oneonta became a place for me to really learn more about myself, as an athlete, student and person overall
Being an athlete and having the opportunity to represent Oneonta on the field, is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Being a part of a lacrosse program, with an incredibly bright future ahead of them, knowing that I was able to be there and help lay the groundwork and set the standard of what it means to be an athlete here, there are no words for it. Nothing compares to being a part of my team here, those guys made every day rewarding, on and off the field, and are guys that will be in my life for years to come. For four years here, I had teammates who are part of my family up here who can never be replaced and the memories I share with them, I'll cherish for a lifetime. From 6am on ACF, and 16's twice a week preseason, to Kimmel Stick work and SUNYAC games, these were teammates who were there for it all and I thank them for doing it with me.
As a student here, I was able to discover what it was that drove me in my education and learning where I wanted to go with life after Oneonta. I was able to find drives in making Dean's and Provost List to want to be more successful and if not for the professors and academics services, I would not be where I am.
Finally, as a person, I've learned who I am by surrounding myself with people who bring out the best in me. Oneonta has brought me some of the greatest friends and people I could have ever asked for. From my coaches, roommates, teammates, professors and all the others who I've encountered over my four years, thank you for what you've done. I've learned who I am as person more than I ever could have anywhere else and from before I came here. I could never imagine myself anywhere else for college because of the impact the people and this school have had on me. Oneonta, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for these past four years, you've given me more than I could have ever imagined getting in a college. You'll also be remembered and sorely missed when all is done.
Head Coach Pete Owens said,
"Jack Bauckham (Somers/Somers) is selfless. He is the consummate teammate, and a wonderful human being. Jack has only ever thought of how he can best serve the program. For this, he was loved and respected by his teammates in a unique way; my strong suspicion is that everyone that played with Jack has a story that supports this. This attitude will lead Jack to success in any endeavor he pursues."
