Virtual Presentation: A Sunrise Scimitar. Monday, June 7, 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Early risers in the Northeast US on Thursday morning, June 10th, will - weather conditions permitting - be treated to the most unusual sunrise of their lives: We will not see a yellow-orange circle of light, but a large solar eclipse which will transform the sun into a fiery scimitar! From the Tri-State Area, sunrise is at 5:24 am, and a maximum eclipse comes nine minutes later when eighty percent of the Sun's diameter will be obscured. Such a circumstance is very rare, having occurred only twice in the past 150 years (in September 1875 and October 1959). In this presentation, meteorologist Joe Rao will discuss the mechanics of what causes eclipses as well as look at events coming our way in the future, including the total solar eclipse that will be visible from upstate New York and New England on April 8, 2024. This program is presented in partnership with the Town of Pelham Public Library, the Somers Library and the Warner Library. John Lennon: Watching the Wheels. Thursday, June 10, 7:00 - 8:15 pm. The year 2020 marked what would have been John Lennon's 80th birthday, and it was also the 40th anniversary of his untimely death in New York City. Accordingly, this program, taking its name from one of his final hits, celebrates the life and times of the poetic Beatle who gave us such classics as "All You Need is Love, " "Eight Days A Week," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Help" and many others. We'll trace Lennon's life from his early days in Liverpool through the Beatles' success and eventual breakup in 1969, as he moved on to spend the 1970s exploring other interests, from solo albums to campaigning for peace with his wife, artist Yoko Ono. The upbeat, fast-moving program features video, music and the clever insights Lennon was known for. As he sang on Sgt. Pepper, "A splendid time is guaranteed for all."
