Twelve public and private high schools were represented by 17 five-to seven-person teams, each competing in the Envirothon and testing their knowledge of environmental topics including soils, land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife, in addition to a subtopic that focused on a relevant environmental issue: managing different types of waste generated by individuals, households, communities, businesses, manufacturing, agriculture, and industry.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “I’m so impressed by the participants today, who have not only displayed hard work and discipline, but demonstrated their environmental knowledge that will benefit the future of Westchester County’s natural world.”

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “It was a momentous day at Mountain Lakes Park, watching young environmental stewards showcasing their knowledge and skills at the first-ever Envirothon held in Westchester County.”

The 2022 Regional Envirothon was co-sponsored by the Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District, Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and Watershed Agricultural Council.

Westchester County Planning Commissioner Norma Drummond said, “The response to our first-ever regional Envirothon in Westchester County has been tremendous. With more than 100 students representing a dozen high schools from Westchester and Putnam counties attending, this year’s event is a great start for future regional Envirothons being held in Westchester.”
