Meet Melani Sessa: Mind-Gut Wellness Advocate

The intelligent and caring Melani Sessa has an interesting story. Melani has a passion for reaching out to help people improving their health by educating them on the mind gut connection. I met Melani through the networking groups of Master Networks and Girl Boss. Meeting Melani in person is the best way to get to know her. She answered a few of my questions for HamletHub to share her story with our readers.

Tell us about yourself.

My husband Ralph and I are blessed parents to 3 wonderful children (18, 15 and 10). We live in Somers, NY.

I pursued an international business career. I have a BA in Spanish and an MBA in International Business with a concentration in Marketing. I spent many years in corporate marketing before choosing to (mostly) be a stay at home mom. When our first born was 18 months old I got the itch to do something. I joined my first Network Marketing Company as it was a great way to keep my business skills polished, have a flexible schedule and meet amazing people! Additionally, for the past 8 years, I have had the privilege and very fun opportunity to be an adjunct business instructor at a college down county.

Why did you pursue a career in health & wellness?

Our family experienced an unexpected tragedy in 2002 when someone very close to us died as a result of sinus cancer. He was very young; the man left behind a young widow and 2 toddlers That is absolutely life-changing.

This made me want to find out everything I could about why people...young people...get horrible diseases that many times end in death. So... I devoured anything I could read, watch and listen to that was related to the topic of health. And I learned a lot!!! As an educator, I know that self-education is the best because the “student” is passionate about the topic and WANTS to learn!

Then about 10 years ago, someone else very close to me was diagnosed with dementia. Again, this is a life-changing diagnosis. And made me want to understand the deterioration of brain.

Interestingly enough, in 2015 I joined a health and wellness networking marketing company which expanded my knowledge and solidified my belief in supplementation (along with other factors) as part of a healthy lifestyle.

What is a trend you are seeing in your field?

I firmly believe that the gut is the future of both mental and physical wellness. It’s funny that I say “future” because back in 300 BC Hippocrates famously said “All disease begins in the Gut”!

Additionally, the World Health Organization has deemed Stress as the #1 Health Epidemic of the 21st Century. Stress affects everyone and chronic moderate stress (everyday stress) when not dealt with will cause tremendous negative effects on our health.

Since our gut is home to over 100 trillion bacteria (we are made up of more bacteria than human cells!), the condition of our gut will affect our mental and physical wellness! These bacteria need probiotic, prebiotic and phytobiotic intervention to thrive and positively affect our overall health.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting to look at improving their health?

Health is a multifactorial approach. The first thing to consider is what you are putting in your mouth and what is your weight. Many health conditions can be alleviated and even eliminated by losing excess weight. Secondly, food choices are important. If you could only make one change to your diet, I would suggest eliminating white sugar and white flour from it. And third, supplementation is important because I believe our food supply does not contain the nutrition that it once had (I’ve read you have to eat 5 of today’s oranges to get the nutrition from 1 orange of 30 years ago! Beyond that exercise, sleep, removing toxic relationships and mindfulness are all part of a healthy lifestyle

What sets Amare apart from other health and wellness products?

I was introduced to Amare in December of 2017. As I mentioned, I was part of another Health and Wellness company which I loved. However, when I found Amare I realized that what our products offered was the “missing piece”. Our systems and products focus on mental wellness! We have the first and only natural system to optimize the health of the mind gut connection.

This is important because it has been stated that 70-90% of our immune system is located in the gut! In addition to that, science has recently discovered in the last 5-10 years that the mind and the gut are directly connected so that the health of one affects the health of the other! But we’ve known that intuitively, right? Whenever we feel stressed or nervous...don’t we feel butterflies?

What do you love about Somers, NY?

I love the small town feel of the community. I grew up not too far away in Cortlandt Manor which was small back then too! I love that we have community events and that our neighborhoods are perfect for trick or treating! I also love that our kids go to school together from Kindergarten to 12th grade (no combining of elementary schools at the upper grade levels).
