Putnam County's geology was richly endowed with a wide variety of minerals. William Blake noted several early nineteenth-century geological studies in his 1849 History of Putnam County. The abundance of iron and other minerals iron could be industrially compounded with made Cold Spring an ideal site for the West Point Foundry.How much do you know about how iron is made? Do you know what a blast furnace is? Do you know what a bloomery is? Have you heard of a forge? Join Putnam History Museum as we welcome Donald "Doc" Bayne who will present a lecture on the making of iron from colonial times to the present day. This talk with accompanying PowerPoint presentation will last approximately 1 hour.

A retired New York State Forest Ranger, Doc Bayne has been the Environmental Educator and Historian for Sterling Forest State Park for many years. Doc has acquired a vast knowledge of the forest, animals, revolutionary history, Native Americans, and iron history.
