Interfaith Minister Offers Monthly Sunday Service at Chapel at Croton Falls

HamletHub was introduced to a Interfaith Service minister, Rev. Deborah Moldow by one of their congregation members. This unique opportunity welcomes all members of the community to come together for a peaceful, prayerful, and uplifting service. Rev. Moldow answered a few of our questions to help us understand how the Interfaith Service came about and what the services are like.

Why did you start the Interfaith Services?

I'm Rev. Deborah Moldow, an Interfaith Minister ordained in 1993. I've been leading Interfaith Sundays once a month for more than eight years at the Chapel at Croton Falls, a Presbyterian Church. We had been hosting occasional interfaith services when Rona Levine, a local meditation and yoga instructor, suggested we do it on a regular basis.

What can someone expect at an Interfaith service?

Interfaith Sundays are usually on the third Sunday of the month, from 10:30-12 noon followed by refreshments. Every one is different, although we have some regular themes throughout the year, such as the Symphony of Peace Prayers in May, the International Day of Peace (including the re-dedication of the Peace Pole outside the Chapel) in September, the Interfaith Brunch in the sanctuary in November, and our biggest event of the year, the Winter Solstice evening service in December, where we bring in the light for the coming year. The Chapel is always lovely and has a very special feel, but it is particularly beautiful at Christmas and Easter, when it is gloriously decorated for the season by Wayne Outhouse and family.

Most Interfaith Sundays feature a special guest and often guest musicians as well. We have had speakers from many different traditions, from Native American storytellers to Tantric masters, as well as healers, authors and clergy, and guests from many countries including India, France, England, Pakistan, Australia and Ethiopia. Our team of regulars includes Interfaith Ministers Rev. Gary Deinstadt and Rev. Melanie Gambino, and Miriam "Sita" Zernis, who leads Kirtan chanting in Sanskrit and English by call and response.

Every Interfaith Sunday is a unique experience, where we learn about the heart of different faith traditions and there is always time for sharing and prayer. Regular interfaith services are still quite rare, so we feel we've created something special here in Croton Falls. One of our guest speakers recalls it fondly as "the Chapel at the center of the universe."
