Moon Landing Movie Mania: Space Movies to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing this Summer at the Somers Library
Fridays: July 12, July 19, July 26, & August 2, 12:00 pm-2:30 pm
  • July 12: Destination Moon (NR) - Almost two decades before it became a reality, Tinseltown imagined what the first trip to the moon would be like with this 1950 movie that's considered to be one of the first space-themed films to actually incorporate real science. Plus, the film won an Oscar for its convincing (for the 50s, anyway) special effects.
  • July 19: 2001: A Space Odyssey (G) - Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece isn't just one of the best space movies of all time-it's widely considered by critics as one of the best films in history. Spanning the dawn of mankind to the distant future, the film depicts humanity's quest to solve the mystery behind a strange object on the moon-all set to an iconic soundtrack.
  • July 26: The Right Stuff (PG) - Starring Sam Shepard, Dennis Quaid, and Ed Harris, this 1983 classic tells the story of America's earliest astronauts that led the United States' first attempt at manned spaceflight. The movie won four Oscars for its sound and visuals, and was nominated for four more-including Best Picture, but it lost to Terms of Endearment.
  • August 2: For All Mankind (NR) - This masterful 1989 documentary took all of the footage from the Apollo missions and whittled it down to less than two hours. It's narrated only by recordings of the astronaut's voices (Buzz Aldrin can be heard saying, "We came in peace for all of mankind") and mission control, layered with music by Brian Eno.
These movies are intended for adults, however, teens and children over 10 are welcome with an adult. Registration is required; register online on our online calendar or call 914-232-5717.
