NY Delaying Primary to June 23rd

New York is pushing back its presidential primary from April to June due to the outbreak of coronavirus across the state.

The original date of the Presidential primary was April 28th, it has now been consolidated with state and congressional primaries slated for June 23rd

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the change Saturday at his daily briefing , saying it would be irresponsible to have people coming to the polls while New York has the largest outbreak of coronavirus in the nation.

“I don’t think it’s wise to bring a lot of people to one location,” the governor said.

The move had been expected in recent days as election commissioners from across the state have urged a consolidated June 23 primary. June 23rd had already been scheduled for state legislature and congressional primaries.

New York was also slated to hold a few special elections, including one for an open congressional seat in western New York which has been empty since Chris Collins announced his resignation Sept 30, 2019  due to his indictment on insider trading charges

The NY Presidential primary puts Joe Biden against Bernie Sander on the Democratic ticket. President Trump is the only Republican on the ballot in NY.

There are now 52,318 cases of COVID-19 cases in New York, up by 7,681 from last official count Friday, Cuomo announced in Saturday’s public briefing.

Of the 52,318 cases, 7,328 have required hospitalization and 1,755 of those have received treatment in an Intensive Care Unit. Gov. Cuomo announced that to date, 2,726 patients have been discharged as well.
