Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect for the Region until 9 pm.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Southeastern NY State until 9:00 pm tonight. The area affected includes Westchester and Putnam Counties. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch was also issued for most of Connecticut including Northern and Southern Fairfield Counties.

severe thunderstorm refers to a thunderstorm capable of producing hail that is at least 1 inch in diameter or larger, and/or wind gusts of 58 mph or greater, and/or a tornado.  These can cause severe damage to trees, property and utilities and make driving conditions hazardous.There can also be lightning associated with severe thunderstorms which can wreak havoc with electronic equipment. It is recommended that you unplug electronic equipment. Power surges from lightning can damage computers, monitors and TVs, and cause sparks that might start a fire.
