State Police in Hawthorne investigate fatal crash on the Sprain Brook Parkway

On October 24, 2018 the New York State Police from the Hawthorne barracks investigated a fatal motor vehicle collision on the Sprain Brook Parkway in the town of Greenburgh at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Initial investigation suggests Denis E. Mays, age 62, of Mount Vernon, NY, was operating a 2016 Infiniti, and was involved in a property damage motor vehicle collision on State Route 100C.  Mays fled the scene of the initial collision southbound on the Sprain Brook Parkway.  Approximately a half-mile south of the initial collision, Mays struck a 2015 Toyota while attempting to move from the right lane into the center lane southbound.  This caused the 2015 Toyota to lose control, and strike the guardrail on the right shoulder.  Mays’ 2016 Infiniti continued to move to the left, or in an easterly direction, crossed the center median, and entered the northbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway.  Mays then struck two additional vehicles on the northbound side, a 2015 Honda in the center lane, and a 2016 Infiniti in the right lane.

Denis E. Mays was pronounced deceased at the scene by Greenburgh Paramedics.

The operators of the three additional vehicles involved sustained minor injuries only.

The initial collision investigation on State Route 100C is being investigated by Greenburgh Police Department.  Greenburgh Fire Department and the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Troop K Collision Reconstruction Unit also responded to the scene.

This investigation remains on-going.
