The 6th annual Great Mac & Chili Challenge will be held on Sunday January 26, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Norwalk at The SoNo Collection. “We seriously considered not holding this competition due to costs but we have a surprisingly large and passionate foodie following that wants us to keep going” said Jim Keenan, Event Director. Keenan says they’ve been inundated with emails, social media and calls asking when the next competition is happening. For the past three years, this event has been held outdoors in Westport during November but this popular comfort food competition is moving back to January and indoors.
The competition will once again feature unlimited sampling of both chili and mac & cheese from some of the area’s best chefs and restaurants. The event will test a new internet voting system using your cell phone in the hopes of reducing waste from traditional paper ballots. A voting kiosk will be available for anyone without a cell phone or needs assistance. Additionally, only tickets will be sold online so there won’t be any ticket sold at the door so get your tickets while they last and bring them to this fan favorite event.
The Great Mac & Chili Challenge remains a people’s choice competition with attendees rating all they try on a scale from 7 to 10.5. The restaurants with the highest average rating in each of the three categories are declared champions. The categories include classic beef chili, creative chili and mac ‘n cheese. Over 20 outstanding restaurants will be in the competition including two-time defending champion Burger Bar & Bistro of Norwalk (classic mac), defending champion Cask Republic of Greenwich & New Haven (creative mac), former champion Bobby Q’s of Norwalk, Dunville’s of Westport, Gates of New Canaan, two-time, former champion Geronimo of Fairfield & New Haven (creative chili), Harbor Harvest of East Norwalk, the most decorated and three-time and defending champion Hub & Spoke of Black Rock (classic beef chili), 2016 champion Little Pub of Wilton, Fairfield, Stratford and Old Greenwich (creative chili), Local Kitchen & Beer Bar of Norwalk, defending champion Old Post Tavern of Fairfield (creative chili), Planet Pizza of Norwalk, multiple champion Simply Delicious of Norwalk (both creative chili and man ‘n cheese), Tarry Lodge of Westport, and Vazzy’s of Stratford.
The competition will benefit Food Rescue US in the ongoing fight against food insecurity.
