The Norwalk Shellfish Commission, in conjunction with the Norwalk Harbor Management Commission, announces the unveiling of the John Frank Memorial at Calf Pasture Beach. A special unveiling is planned for Monday, September, 24 at 6:15 p.m. at the memorial plaque located near the pier. The public is welcome to share in recognition of Frank’s contributions to Norwalk during a brief ceremony.
Frank retired as Captain from the Norwalk Police Department in 1985. He then served on the Norwalk Shellfish Commission from 1987 to 2010. As chairman for many years, Frank always stood up for the public’s rights and interests and was a valiant steward of Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound. Frank believed he had a responsibility to help care for this vital ecosystem and help ensure that its natural values are not just used for short-term gain but instead are sustained for future generations.
The memorial describes the history of shellfishing in Norwalk as well as the evolution of shellfish grounds management, which was led into the modern era by Frank.
Frank passed away on May 30, 2016, at age 81.
