Westport Farmers Market Announces Young Shoots Photography Contest Winners at Reception at Gilbertie’s Herbs and Garden Center

A late summer evening on the lawn at Gilbertie’s Herbs and Garden Center, with refreshments provided by Sugar and Olives, was the perfect backdrop to showcase this year’s winners of the Westport Farmers’ Market's 8th annual Young Shoots photography contest. Young Shoots is a friendly competition sponsored by Westport Farmers’ Market (WFM), in partnership with The Artists Collective of Westport and Drew Friedman Community Arts Center, where budding young photographers, ages 8 to 18, take pictures at the market throughout the summer.

“Young Shoots invites three age groups of photographers to demonstrate their love for local food through the digital lens,” said Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of WFM. “Each year the kids get better and more creative with their vision of food and farmers and this year was no exception.”

Photos submitted by photographers 8- to 10-years-old; 11- to 14-years-old; and 15- to 18-years-old were judged by a panel of local artists and the public. First place winners receive a cash prize and the opportunity to lead a food photo shoot with prominent local chef, Bill Taibe. Second place winners win a $50 cash prize.

“This wonderful community photo exhibit for kids 8- to 18-years old once again shined a light on the boundless creativity and potential of Westport’s youth,” said Miggs Burroughs of The Drew Friedman Community Arts Center. “It was my great pleasure to join the Westport Farmers Market and the Artists Collective of Westport in presenting the winners and entries of Young Shoots.
