Become a Friend of the Market and Support Westport Farmers’ Community Programming

Westport Farmers’ Market (WFM) is proud to present its 2021 Friend of the Market (FOM) bag, the purchase of which supports myriad community programs run by WFM.

Each year the market sells a newly designed tote bag for $40. Over 50 vendors at the market, and additional guest vendors throughout the season, offer discounts to shoppers who show the season’s Friend of the Market bag. The purchase of a bag directly off sets the fees of the participating vendors – thus letting these farmers take more money home. The fundraising efforts of the market, a 501c-3 nonprofit organization, work to support their internal and external programming. Programs sponsored by the market include:

We Care, a program to help support market goers that are battling an illness.

Farmer To School To Community (FSC), a partnership between Staples High School Culinary School, the Gillespie Center, and local farmers where students learn about local ingredients while helping their neighbors in need.

Farmer To Kids To Community (FKC) teaches Bridgeport elementary school students to use local and seasonal ingredients to prepare delicious and healthy meals for their families.

Get Growing, a series of weekly events and contests specifically designed for younger visitors to the market.

Young Shoots, a partnership with the Artists Collective sponsoring a photography contest for children from 8 to 18.

Recipe Program helps customers create easy, healthy, and delicious meals using fresh local products found at the market.

Bridgeport Rescue Mission (BRM), a weekly partnership that rewards residents within the BRM rehabilitation program for good behavior with an outing to WFM where they collect food from WFM farmers and vendors.

Farmer-In-Need, a fund to help vendors who fall on hard times.

Chef At The Market showcases Fairfield County's top chefs who support local farms.

Farms To Veterans To Community provides veterans affiliated with Homes for the Brave the opportunity to learn how to prepare farm-fresh food with the guidance of WFM's vast chef network.

“Westport Farmers’ Market is known locally and nationally as a market that gives back to the community,” said Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of WFM. “The Friend of the Market program is your way of voicing support for these programs, while helping offset vendors’ fees so they can take home more money at the end of the day.”

FOM bags, and a full description of WFM programming, may be found at www.westportfarmersmarket.com. WFM will return to its home in the parking lot at 50 Imperial Avenue beginning Thursday, May 13. The summer market will run from 10 to 2 and will resume most of its pre-pandemic, onsite shopping experience. Those who wish to pre-order can continue to do so through individual vendors’ websites.
