Ecological Home Landscaping Series at Flanders
Flanders is excited to announce plans for a brand new Ecological Home Landscaping Series! This four-part series is tailored for homeowners seeking to manage their properties in alignment with ecological principles. Each workshop features practical advice from leading experts on creating sustainable and visually appealing landscapes, while contributing to ecological balance. Key topics include support for wildlife, water conservation, soil erosion control, water quality enhancement, biodiversity promotion, invasive removal, reduced reliance on toxic pesticides, and minimal use of non-renewable resources. By adopting these practices, homeowners can cultivate gardens that are both environmentally responsible and a joy to experience.
The series starts on Monday, February 24 with The Basic Principles of Ecological Landscaping to Benefit Wildlife Diversity. The instructor, Peter Picone, Wildlife Biologist at Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, will share his insights to enhancing habitat for a variety of wildlife.
The second class in the series, Finding and Choosing Native Plants is scheduled for Monday, March 10th. In this class, led by Lisa Turoczi, Owner, Earth Tones Nursery in Woodbury, you’ll discover native plants specific to our region and learn practical methods for sourcing and propagating them.
In the final class on Monday April 7, Designing Native Gardens and
Reducing Lawn Area, we will learn how to approach new and existing garden areas to incorporate ecological landscape design principles to create pollinator-friendly gardens. This last class is taught by Sarah Bailey, Master Gardener Coordinator, University of Connecticut, College of Agriculture, Health and Natural.
All classes take place at 6:30 PM inside the Flanders Studio located at 5 Church Hill Road in Woodbury. There is a cost to attend these classes. The cost per class is $36 for members and $51 for non-members. There is a discount for registering for all 4 classes. Preregistration is required as space is limited.
