Young Professionals hosting Socks For All drive through May 15

The Young Professionals of Waterbury Region (YPOWR), a program of the Waterbury Regional Chamber, has organized its annual “Socks for All” Sock Drive that will run through May 15, 2019. Socks are one of the most-needed but least-collected items requested by non-profit organizations.

The group will work to collect hundreds of new socks in all sizes from infant-adult and monetary gifts to support local area charitable organizations. These organizations include the Annie C. Courtney Foundation, Acts 4 Ministry, Inc., Carolyn’s Place, Naugatuck Youth Services, St. Vincent De Paul Mission of Waterbury, and Wheeler Clinic.

“Our organization depends solely on donations, so a donation like that of the YPOWR Sock Drive is key to us helping our clients,” stated Cavallo, director of Carolyn’s Place. As a pregnancy care center that provides support and services for expectant mothers and their newborns, Carolyn’s Place will benefit from some of the newborn and infant socks collected during the drive.

“Socks are absolutely a much-needed item,” Cavallo said. “People love to donate cute blankets and outfits, but socks are an extremely important donation and much appreciated.”

After much research into what type of effort could make the greatest impact on local organizations, the sock drive was born. Although many people choose to donate their lightly-used clothes to charitable organizations, socks are usually not in that pile, and so are a highly-sought after item by those in need.

“The Socks for All Drive is an easy and impactful way to give back to our community,” explained YPOWR Founder Courtney Ligi. “We’ve seen our young professionals and our community come together time and again to make a difference, and we know this effort will be no different. Giving back is a key component of Y.P.O.W.R’s programming.”

Members of Y.P.O.W.R. will have a collection booth in front of Wal-Mart at 1100 New Haven Road in Naugatuck from 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM on Sunday, May 5 to collect sock donations. Donations of socks and monetary donations to purchase socks can be sent to or brought to the Waterbury Regional Chamber, 83 Bank Street 4th Floor, P.O. Box 1469, Waterbury, CT 06721.

The mission of Y.P.O.W.R. is to energize young professionals aged 21 to 39 who are looking to grow their careers in the Waterbury area by engaging them in positive opportunities for professional development, educational, social and community service.
