Youth Art Month Region 15 Students Art Exhibit
March 3 through March 29, 2020 during open hours

This month, we're very excited to join Region 15 in celebrating Youth Art Month by displaying a range or artwork by students in Region 15. Youth Art Month is a program administered nationally by the Council for Art Education (CFAE) that emphasizes the value of art education for all students, encourages support for quality school art programs, and provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences.

A selection of two-dimensional mixed media, paintings, photography, and drawings created by students at Gainfield, Long Meadow, Middlebury, and Pomperaug Elementary Schools, Rochambeau and Memorial Middle Schools, and Pomperaug High (PHS) School will be on display, including work from students in the Art Enrichment and Advanced Placement Fine Art and Photography classes.

Included in this year's collection is a piece from Gavin Galipault from Rochambeau Middle School (RMS) who studied the work of traditional portraiture, specifically Johanness Vermeer, a Dutch Baroque period painter particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work. "Students used photographic references to study the natural features and shaded values of the faces in the artwork. We particularly focused on Vermeer's use of the camera obscura. I am very pleased with the artwork the students created as a result!" said Margaret Murphy, Art Teacher at RMS.

Leila Murphy, from Pomperaug High School (PHS), will also have her work on display in the art show.  Her Digital Art titled, "Portrait," was recently awarded an Honorable Mention in the prestigious 31st annual Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards held at the Silpe Gallery at the University of Hartford in Hartford, CT in February.

Selected pieces from PHS juniors Ioanna Anastasiadou and Allen Sager, students in the Advanced Photography class will also be featured.  Their art exemplifies how students manipulate their work through photoshop to seamlessly create original composites. "Students in advanced photography classes take their own photos. Originality and ownership of the image is an important concept at this level. However, students also create compositions using borrowed images to create a fresh new piece," said Alisa Rosenberg, PHS Art Teacher. Ionana's piece is a study of the relationship between positive and negative space. Allen's portrait is influenced by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who used fruits, vegetables, flowers and even fish in his paintings. Allen obtained images off the internet and manipulated his composition in Photoshop.

"We appreciate the opportunity to share our students' work with the community and to demonstrate the value of art education for all children.  Art education develops divergent and critical thinking skills; multicultural awareness; and technical, communication and expressive skills. Supporting our artists and quality art programming is an integral part of our educational curriculum," said Jeromy Nelson, Director of Fine, Applied and Technical Arts in Region 15.
