Charcoal Hearths at the Whittemore Sanctuary this Weekend

Hikers at Flanders’ Whittemore Sanctuary will occasionally come across large raised circular mounds that appear odd and out of place. These 40-foot-wide circles are the remains of charcoal hearths on which colliers burned logs to create charcoal.

In this 2-part program, Peter and Barbara Rzasa will first present a slide presentation on Friday, May 13 at 7PM in the Flanders Studio describing the charcoal hearths that have been located on the Whittemore and explain the charcoal making process used in the nineteenth century to power Connecticut’s iron, steel and brass industries.

The following day, Saturday, May 14th @ 10 AM, The Rzasas will take participants on a hike to many of Whittemore’s charcoal hearths for a look at the remnants of 100–150-year-old charcoal.
