The Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition (PRWC) reports that William Burton, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), will be continuing his project to develop a new bedrock geologic map of the area within and near the Pomperaug River watershed region. The USGS has a mission to produce high-quality geologic maps of the nation.
The last map of this area was published over 60 years ago and lacks the data needed for modern land-use decisions. The area Mr. Burton will be working in during the period June 18-30 includes parts of the towns of Bethlehem, Middlebury, Roxbury, Southbury and Woodbury. The process he uses includes taking measurements on the bedrock exposures and collecting samples when needed. Mr. Burton will carry a USGS identification card and obtain landowner permission for visits on private property.
Questions in advance of and during project work can be directed to William Burton at: bburton@usgs.gov" data-type="mail">bburton@usgs.gov. You may also call PRWC at 203-263-0076 for assistance with contacting Mr. Burton.
