Southbury Public Library Summer Reading: Imagine Your Story

Southbury Public Library Summer Reading Program kicks off Monday, June 29, and runs through Friday, August 7!

The Library is participating in READsquared, an online summer reading program, thanks to the Connecticut State Library. Register ONLINE on or after Monday, June 29. Read below to find out more about our virtual programming, unique challenges, and more! The Southbury Public Library will announce online registration details SOON. 


Reading Challenges by Age Group  

Children entering Kindergarten and younger may participate in our Pre-K Program. Keep track of every title you read and log it in READsquared. Earn extra points by participating in our challenges. One winner will be chosen each week and will receive two brand new books. You may also participate in our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program.

School age children in Grades 1-5 may participate in our Children's Program. For every hour you read, keep track and log it in READsquared. Earn extra points by participating in our challenges. One winner will be chosen each week and will receive a gift card, sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. 

Children and teens entering Grades 6-12 (and class of 2020 Graduates) may participate in our Teen Program. For every hour you read, keep track and log it in READsquared. Earn extra points by participating in our challenges. Each week will feature a raffle for a different gift card; one winner will be chosen; sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. 

Online registration for the reading challenge and programs will be available for all children and teens ages 0-18 starting Monday, June 29. The program will run until Friday, August 7.

Storytimes

Drop-In Storytime Online
Monday, July 6, 13, 20, 27, August 3, 10:30am, Online, NO registration required.

Join us online every Monday morning for a drop-in storytime. We'll share books, rhymes, and songs and end with a simple paper craft. All ages are welcome. No registration is required.

Meet some of our animal friends from Animal Embassy. Animal Embassy is dedicated to fostering an individual's appreciation and respect for the natural world and the incredible diversity of life on Earth.

Food Explorers: Garlic Knots (for children ages 7 and up and their families) 
Tuesday, July 14, 2:00pm, Online, Registration required.

Join Katie Shepherd, Registered Dietitian from Food Explorers to make homemade Garlic Knots! This yeast free version uses yogurt for a deliciously light and fluffy texture. While they're baking you'll learn about the food groups through a kitchen scavenger hunt! An ingredient list will be shared in advance.

Food Explorers: Black Bean Brownie Bites (for children ages 7 and up and their families) 
Wednesday, July 15, 1:00pm, Online, Registration required.

Join Katie Shepherd, Registered Dietitian from Food Explorers for a fun program of baking and learning about food! We'll be making Black Bean Brownies and playing Nutrition Price is Right. An ingredient list will be shared in advance. You will also need a food processor.

Cactus Head Puppets: Magnificent Monster Circus (for All Ages) 
Online video; access online with registration anytime between Monday, June 20 and Friday, June 24

Come one, come all, to a circus like no other! Encounter magnificent creatures from the wilds of your imagination as their quirky human caretaker tries to teach them new tricks. Kids can lend a hand to Eustice the Unicycling Unimonster, make friends with a Fiery Fanged Worm, and more! This colorful, silly, multi-sensory show full of friendly monsters is perfect match for young audiences.

Children's and Family at Home  Challenges

Follow the Southbury Library Youth Services Facebook page and our library website for daily challenges. Log your completed challenges in READsquared. These challenges are optional. There is no time limit. Participate by yourself or as a family. Take a picture and share it with us on our Facebook page.

Alphabet Adventures

Starting Monday, June 29 we'll be spotlighting each letter of the alphabet. Stay tuned for a new activity every day (Monday-Friday for 26 days) This challenge is geared towards Pre-K readers but anyone can participate.

Daily Adventures

Starting Monday, June 29 we'll give you a daily challenge. Stay tuned for a new activity every day, fitting each daily theme. These challenges are geared towards ages 5 & up but anyone can participate. 

  • STEAMonday: Start off the week with full STEAM ahead with a tutorial for a simple, at home experiment.
  • Take it Outside Tuesday: Get outside and get active. Get ready for a physical challenge.
  • Wonder Wednesday: We're asking questions. Can you provide the answer?
  • Thankful Thursday: Shout out who or what you're thankful for. Do a random act of kindness.
  • Fine Art Friday: We provide the topic, you provide the artwork.

Join us on Zoom for a mix of fun, zoom based games! Silly, fun, and lighthearted, these games don't require any supplies except a device with a webcam and a sense of humor.

Pasta with Food Explorers (for Grades 6-12 and their families)

Join us and Katie Shepherd, Registered Dietitian from Food Explorers for a fun, hands on program of cooking and learning about food! We'll be making homemade pasta. An ingredient list will be shared in advance. All on Zoom.

Teen DIY: Upcycled Paper Beads (for Grades 6-12) 
Thursday, July 16, 3:00pm, Online, Registration required

Join us on Zoom for Teen DIY to make upcycled paper beads. Supplies you will need: colorful magazine paper (coupons from the newspaper should work, too), white glue (like Elmer's, or a clear alternative), scissors, a ruler or straight edge, and something narrow like a toothpick or thin stick.

Escape from Atlantis (for Grades 6-12) 
Thursday, July 23, 3:00pm, Online, Registration required

Join us on Zoom for a fun game mixing trivia, scavenger hunts, and quick thinking. You and your crew have 24 hours to escape from Atlantis through a variety of interactive tasks and challenges you'll need. Supplies: paper and a pen/pencil.

Check out the Missions and Bingo sections of Read Squared for our challenges, and log your challenges in READsquared. These challenges are optional. There is no time limit. If you like, take a picture and share it with us on our Facebook or Instagram page.

Book Bingo

Compete in this year's 2020 Book Bingo for Grades 6-12! Make bingo by reading books that fit the listed categories! Making bingo (or multiples) can earn you raffle entries for a $50 Amazon Gift Card!

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Snap a picture of each of the listed items and upload them to READsquared. Each item found is worth 100 points to be used towards the Weekly Prize Raffles. Complete the entire Scavenger Hunt for 100 bonus points and a special program badge!

ARK: Acts of (not so) Random Kindness

Make someone else's day a little brighter with our ARK challenges! These acts of not-so-random kindness are designed to bring a little brightness to your life and the lives of those around you. There's one for each week (plus an extra) and they can be done in any order or at any time. Completing each activity will earn you 100 points each, and completing all 7 earns you the "ARK: Kindness Champion Badge" and 100 bonus points. Use your points from these challenges towards the Weekly Gift Card Prize raffles! You can complete each ARK up to 3 times to earn even more points!
