Acclaimed Local Area Poet Susan Katz To Conduct Poetry Writing Workshops In March

Internationally recognized poet, author, teacher, and language arts consultant, Susan A. Katz of Washington, Connecticut, will offer a four-session poetry writing workshop.

The workshops will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays March 12, 13, 19 and 20 at Salt of the Earth Sanctuary at 346 Main Street South in Woodbury from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. The festive final March 20th “Wine & Words” session will welcome invited guests and will feature presentation of each participants’ poetry, and the enjoyment of wine and chocolate.

Susan A. Katz has been writing and publishing poetry for over 30 years. She is a nationally recognized poet, author, and teacher who embraces the educational philosophy that language is the key to learning. She has conducted student and adult workshops for more than three decades. 

Ms. Katz’s passionately believes that poetry is “The door into ourselves and the window through which we see and express our feelings about ourselves and the world around us.” This belief has been the driving force behind her years spent conducting poetry workshops for “Poets in Public Service,” and independently in tandem with a Karl Orff music specialist Judith A. Thomas. Together they translated words and feelings into music and movement. 

Susan Katz’s poems have received numerous accolades from poets and editors and her work has appeared in dozens of national and international poetry journals and magazines, including “The American Scholar.”  She has three published volumes of poetry and three textbooks addressing the issue of teaching poetry and integrating it into school curriculums. 

During her March workshops, Ms. Katz will incorporate techniques that, “Define poetry, imagery, metaphor, simile, alliteration, and hyperbole to turn feelings into words and words into poems. Participants will explore the beauty of language and its use as a tool for healing and elevating our spirits.”

Some of the workshop sessions will be accompanied by the gifted Washington resident, teacher, composer, musician, and vocalist, Sharon Ruchman, who will translate written poetic words into music.

The first session will focus on an introduction to poetry and the development of writing skills. The second session with concentrate on editing and refinement of each participant’s poems and an introduction of music by pianist Sharon Ruchman.

The third session will incorporate final editing and the participants’ poem and the creation of “Words into Music” presentations for the final session on March 20th.

Guests will be invited to the final “The Healing Power of Poetry” session which will include the verbal presentation of each participant’s poem, Sharon Ruchman’s musical interpretation of each poem on her keyboard piano, plus the serving of wines and chocolates.

At the end of the final program, guests will be invited to share the power of their experience, the beauty of words of the presented poems, and the healing nature of their meaning.

The cost for the four sessions of workshops at the Salt of the Earth Sanctuary at 346 Main Street South in Woodbury is $150.00. Checks can be mailed to Susan A. Katz, PO Box 65, Washington, CT 06793.
