WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO INTO ORTHOPEDICS?

I feel that orthopedics is one of the most rewarding fields in medicine because I can make a tangible difference in someone’s life. Whether someone has a hip fracture and is in pain or someone has debilitating arthritis, when I leave the operating room, I know I have made a difference in the quality of their life. There is really nothing more fulfilling for me.

WHAT ARE SOME EMERGING CHALLENGES IN YOUR FIELD?

Some emerging challenges in the field are in joint replacement. Our aging yet active population wants to keep their mobility and continue to be active, so as baby boomers age there is increasing demand for replacement surgeries. One way to improve outcomes from hip and knee replacement is by using robotic-assisted and robotic-navigated surgical techniques. The precision that is achieved leads to improved recovery times and outcomes, and is helping patients obtain the improved mobility they are seeking.

WHAT ARE SOME NEW TECHNIQUES IN THE FIELD OF JOINT REPLACEMENT?

There are several new techniques in the world of hip and knee replacement. I am bringing the technique of Anterior Hip Replacement to OrthoConnecticut. There are three major approaches to hip replacement: anterior, lateral and posterior lateral. The anterior approach is very exciting because the incision is made in the front of the hip, which is “muscle-sparing”, meaning that you are not cutting into deep muscle. In select patients, this allows for faster recovery and earlier rehab, with less restrictions on the movements you can do after surgery. So, while I do perform all three approaches, I am really excited to bring the anterior approach here.

WHY DO YOU LIKE BEING A DOCTOR?

It feels funny to say this, but I can’t imagine myself in any other job. I really picked the perfect career for my personality. I love the efficiency of the operating room and being able to work with my hands. But I also love being able to meet people, work with a team, hear about people’s problems and help “fix” them. I can't think of anything more rewarding than watching a patient walk out the door with a new knee or a new hip, feeling great about themselves. That is why we do this!

IF YOU HAD A DAY TO YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I am a new mom, so there is no such thing as a day to myself right now! Being from Miami, I really love a good beach day. However, after many years in the northeast for my training, I now have an appreciation for fall hikes, which is something that my husband and I, along with our baby, like to do together. That will be something we’ll be doing more of now that we are in Connecticut.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN ORTHOCONNECTICUT?

I chose to join OrthoConnecticut for a lot of reasons. From a professional perspective, when I came and toured the facilities, met with the other surgeons, saw the exam rooms, the surgical hospital and the main hospital, I was just astounded. The people here are warm, wonderful, and are incredibly dedicated to patient care. The facilities are gorgeous and I’m so excited to get started in the O.R.s here. For personal reasons, I wanted to be in the northeast because it’s beautiful, convenient for my family, and it just works for us! I am so excited to work at Orthoconnecticut and start helping patients.
