State Bond Commission Approves $6M to NVCC for Upgrades to Heating/Cooling System

An outdated and inefficient forty-year old system that provides heating, cooling, and hot water for most of the buildings on NVCC’s Waterbury campus, will be receiving some much needed upgrades that will create a more reliable and efficient system thanks to a $6M bond that was approved during a special meeting of the State Bond Commission on December 11.

The General Obligation bond monies that will be disbursed to NVCC are earmarked to replace outdated equipment in its power plant with a more efficient system as part of a project that has been in the planning stages for several years. This project consists of the replacement of the boilers and chillers serving the main college buildings along with related improvements. NVCC Director of Facilities, Robert Divjak has been involved with the planning phase of the project for several years. A bidding process for the upgrades was conducted over the summer and a contractor was selected. The contract for the work is expected to be signed in the near future and work will then get underway

The project will be administered by the CSCU System Office and the Department of Administrative Services (DAS).  Joel Baranowski, from DAS – specifically the Department of Construction Services—will be overseeing the project.

“Joel served as the construction manager for NVCC’s Founders Hall renovation and we are lucky to have him and his expertise on this project as well,” said Dana Elm, NVCC’s Interim Dean of Administration.

Representative Geraldo Reyes, Jr., was one of several individuals who advocated on behalf of the College and was present at the December 11 meeting.  “I've been an advocate and voice for Higher Education and strong supporter of NVCC. As a proud alumnus, I feel an obligation to advocate for all and give back wherever possible. Continued success and growth to NVCC, I'm grateful for Dr. Daisy and her tremendous work in Waterbury-Danbury!”

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. said, “I am delighted to see this project move forward. I am proud and grateful for the support of one of our distinguished alumni, and for the generous teams composed of colleagues at the college, the CSCU System Office and the Department of Administrative Services.”
