Art Gallery Current Exhibit in the Gloria Cachion Gallery Brittany Kletter and John McDonald
June 4 through June 27 during open hoursBrittany Kletter, a painter from Southbury, paints what she refers to as "emotional memories," reflections on the ten years she lived in northern Vermont. "When you live in a place where, in just a car ride to get groceries, the vistas of fields and farms along the way knock you out with their everyday beauty, you remember it."
Ms. Kletter is a graduate of Penn State with a B.A. in Art and Graphic Design. She was represented since 2000 by Chase Gallery, Boston and has exhibited with Kathryn Markel and Ameringer Yohe in New York and Ballard Fetherston in Seattle. She won a full fellowship in painting at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT and the James Gahagan Painting Prize. Winner of five Best in Shows, she has been included in the biennial of the National Academy of Design, an invitational at the Newark Museum , N J., was Printmaker in Residence at Burlington(VT) City Arts, a juror for the Copley Society Masters Show in Boston and juror of awards for the Vermont High School Art Exhibition. Her work is in the collection of Wellington Management, Boston Charles River Associates, Washington D.C., and individual collections of Cheryl Crowe, George Yip, and Road Scholar CEO James Moses.
Her paintings are in both oil and acrylic and her focus is on a smooth brushless surface and the tension created between contained and open space. She is inspired by the work of Pierro Della Francesca and Giorgio Morandi and the American realist painter, Fairfield Porter.
John McDonald has had a life long interest in art and briefly attended Paier Art School in Hamden after high school. His career, however, veered toward, what were then, the new technologies of computers and computer programming. John worked as a computer programmer and later as an Information Systems Auditor.
Retirement has allowed John to spend more time satisfying his artistic leanings. Working almost exclusively in acrylic his work is dominated by landscapes and cloudscapes but an occasional local view can be found. He enjoys taking day trips throughout the area. Such trips include Block Island, Cape Cod, the Connecticut shore line, and Housatonic river valley.
John says that meeting Brittany Kletter in the Heritage Village Pen & Brush Club has improved his paintings immensely. She has taught him that, when doing a painting, he should not accept the initial version of a painting unless he's completely satisfied with it. Instead, one needs to be brave and paint over what they are not pleased with until they get it to where they want it to be. That process, John says, requires a fair amount of courage. It's not easy painting completely over something that is pretty close to what you want. But pretty close is not close enough and, as Brittany has taught him, a painting can actually get exponentially better with all those layers covering past mistakes.
