Ival Kovner
August 2 through August 29 during open hours

Ival Stratford Kovner, MS, MFA of Bethel, Connecticut is a figurative expressionist, who also offers "on location" painting instruction for all levels of ability. Her large scale charcoal drawings of the Connecticut Horse Guard were recently shown in a large, solo exhibition at Blue Mountain Gallery in Chelsea, NYC. Serving as both historian and trooper, Ival decided not only to log ongoing activities of the Guard in writing, but to actually draw the cavalry drills. Her love of horses led her to conduct intensive drawing workshops for Dressage4kids at Chase Collegiate during their annual conference.

Ms. Kovner also paints landscapes throughout New England, many times accompanied with students in studio courses, as well as additional adult workshops. She recently won second prize, professional artist category, in a National Parks competition with a pastel rendering of Weir Farm. Other awards include "Best in Show" for Boston City Hall and several first place honors including "Silver Lake"- a charcoal drawing depicting Ival instructing a Rivier College art student - at the Duxbury Art Museum show.

Ival was selected as the International Sister City Exchange Artist for Boston/Strasbourg and spent two months painting in France, where she developed a unique watercolor style, which she describes as her "blue line" series. Ival has also completed several residencies at Vermont Studio Center.

Ival Kovner's studio is located in her home, a converted Barn, in Bethel, Connecticut, where she resides with her husband and their Springer Spaniel, and often paints with their seven young grandchildren. Her oil painting of students reading is permanently displayed at Bethel Library, while an exhibit of her small drawings is currently at Famous Gallery in Bethel, across from the Bethel Cinema.

She earned her fine arts degree at Boston University and lived and worked in Boston for many years before moving to Connecticut. She and her husband are members of the B'nai Israel Congregation and are often in Southbury. Expect to see artwork by her Heritage Village students and Jewish Federation painters in the future. "Southbury has always felt like home to me and being invited to show at the library is quite marvelous."
