Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club to Hold Open House for the General Public

Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club Invites Southbury Citizens to Tour the Facility and Ask Questions Ahead of Potential July Referendum.

The Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club has invited Southbury citizens to tour the facility on the weekend of June 12-14, from 9 AM to 7 PM each day. Edgewood staff will be stationed throughout the Open House tour to answer questions and provide details about the amenities. Edgewood is located at 100 North Benson Road in Middlebury, CT.

Social distancing measures will be in place. Guests will be required to wear masks for their protection and the safety of Edgewood staff. The Open House will follow a one-way path through the facility and grounds, minimizing contact. The tour will be self-guided, and there is no need to call ahead or make reservations.

The zero-entry swimming pool, fitness center, and basketball court will be open for the tour, even though their use is restricted by the State until June 20. Tennis, paddle, and pickleball courts will also be featured on the tour.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to see the facility first hand and form their own opinions," said Tom Marks, spokesman for the Ad Hoc Task Force charged with evaluating the viability of an Edgewood purchase. "We've received a lot of questions and comments about Edgewood, and we think seeing the facility in-person will provide a lot of answers."

The Town of Southbury has until July 31 to exercise an option to purchase the Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club for $2,000,000. Beginning in 2021, Edgewood would replace the current Town Pool at Ballantine Park, which is fifty years old and has reached the end of its lifespan. The estimated cost to design and construct a new pool and bathhouse at Ballantine, to comply with ADA requirements, is over $4 million.

Town officials are planning on a July referendum on the purchase, although a date has not been set yet due to public health conditions.

On April 16, the Ad Hoc Task Force formally recommended the purchase of Edgewood to the Board of Selectmen. The purchase has since been endorsed by the Board of Finance, the Strategic Plan Commission, the Planning Commission, and the Parks and Recreation Commission.

The Task Force Recommendation Report, along with other pertinent documents relating to the Task Force's work, can be found on the Town website: www.southbury-ct.org/Edgewood.
