Gloria Cachion Art Gallery - Melinda Elliott- Southbury Historical Society September 2020 Exhibit

September 1st to September 28th
The Gloria Cachion Gallery at the Southbury Public Library will feature a historical exhibit of panels researched and created by Melinda Elliott, President of The Southbury Historical Society, from Tuesday September 1st, 2020 through Monday September 28th, 2020.

The Gallery at the Southbury Public Library is going to look a little different during the month of September. Instead of the normal beautiful artwork, there will be a historical display. The Southbury Historical Society was invited to present an exhibit about the time the German-American Bund came to town to establish a pro-Nazi training camp. Southbury residents of 1937 were determined not to let that happen.

The story had been temporarily lost in history until Joyce Hornbecker, town clerk at the time, told the story to a Waterbury Republican-American reporter. In 2012, the Southbury Historical Society contracted Scott Sniffen to make a short film in order to document the incident. Since that time, the story has been brought to the attention of many people around the country. The story and Southbury artifacts are currently featured in a display in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

September's exhibit will feature nine panels in the Gallery that tell the story of the Bund's invasion and the Southbury heroes who found legal means to send them packing. In the Brown Room at the library, additional documents, maps, and photographs will be featured from the Historical Society's vault.
