SoundWaters and Stamford Public Schools Launch Adult Marine Science Program

STAMFORD, CT/May 8, 2025 – SoundWaters, the region’s leader in environmental and climate science education, has partnered with Stamford Public Schools to launch its first ever adult education course. “The Heart of Long Island Sound: Exploring its Ecosystem with SoundWaters” is a four-session program designed to immerse participants in the diverse life thriving in the waters of Long Island Sound.

Hosted at the Cohen SoundWaters Harbor Center at 200 Southfield Avenue in Stamford, the course will run from May 21 to June 11, 2025, with sessions held on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Through hands-on, joyful learning, participants will investigate the biodiversity of the Sound by collecting and examining plankton under microscopes, exploring marine life with nets and waders, and performing comparative dissections of oysters and squid to understand evolutionary biology. The program will also introduce participants to lesser-known species that dwell in the depths of Long Island Sound.

“This program offers adults the opportunity to study Long Island Sound up close,” said President of SoundWaters, Leigh Shemitz. “By engaging directly with the local environment, participants gain lasting knowledge and appreciation for the marine life in their own backyard.”

The class fee is $134, with an additional $10 non-resident fee for participants outside Stamford. Space is limited. For more information and registration, please visit: https://enrichment.stamfordadulted.org/CourseCatalog/ScheduleView.asp?ScheduleId=7686.
