Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.
Meet Geovanna Torres founder of Lulú Lou by Sugar Spa Parties
Q: Tell us about Lulú Lou by Sugar Spa Parties.
A: We are a boutique spa party venue in Stamford designed for children ages 6–13. Our services include hairstyles, sparkle makeup, a facial laboratory, and manicures.
Q: Why did you start your business?
A: I was born to do what I do; this comes naturally to me. I worked hard, saved money, and took all the steps to start my own venture. Now, I’m focused on growing and building something special.
Q: What is your best-selling service?
A: Our Spa Birthday Party is very popular!
Q: How has your business evolved over time?
A: In 2021, I had the idea to offer birthday celebrations at home, but the timing wasn’t right. I worked as a waitress for two years, saving money and studying, before revisiting my original idea. By 2024, I had saved enough to bring my vision to life and found a space for my business.
Q: What inspires you as a small business owner?
A: I think of a forest as a community—a collection of beings with a single purpose. Tall trees, small plants, animals, and insects coexist in harmony, caring for one another to thrive.
A small business has its own heart. We owe ourselves to the community; we are part of the living energy of everyday life. Small businesses are purpose, refuge, and spirit. My neighbors are my friends and customers, and they give me life and joy.
