Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Cultural Pursuit!
Three questions with Laura Schroeder, founder of Cultural Pursuit.
Cultural Pursuit is a member-supported community of art lovers who have a genuine appreciation for art and culture, including visual arts, music, film, and the performing arts.
Why did you start your business?
I started Cultural Pursuit LLC in the spring of 2016 because I discovered there was a demand for a knowledgeable person who knew about the arts in both Fairfield and Westchester counties, to give a larger view of what is available. Having a fine art degree, having lived and worked in professional and volunteer arts positions in both counties (as well as museum administration in NYC), I have a unique perspective of the range of options that are available to someone who is interested in exploring cultural offerings in the region. I started with a group of supporting members who attended private museum tours and cultural events and performances together, and I continue to offer a service to the community with my website and free weekly mailings, featuring select upcoming arts and cultural events. It's helpful for newcomers, empty nesters, or those with free time on the weekends who like to keep current with new exhibitions, music and film series, and performing arts options.
Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “I wish I could…”
I wish I could find a way to convince more people to explore a bit farther and discover and support the programming of more cultural organizations. I have visited almost all of the 50 + organizations I feature on my page on my website, so I know this: we're so lucky to live where we are.. and if you're fortunate enough to be centrally located (like in Stamford!) you can travel a half-hour in either direction and discover a lot!
What is your best selling product/service?
My best product and service is my free weekly newsletter that is based on what I feature on my Cultural Events & Art Exhibitions page of my website. I stay current with the new offerings of major arts organizations in the area, and do my very best to feature a balanced and consistent variety of 4 - 8 upcoming selections of art exhibitions, theatre and dance performances, select classical/ jazz concert series and film festivals.
