UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc., conjointly with the Ferguson Library, will hold an evening of life-saving information and live entertainment in celebration of International Women’s Day, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Library South End Branch, in Stamford.
“The goal of our event is to amplify creative voices of extraordinary women of diverse walks of life and to inform on available resources for women,” explains Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the Executive Director of UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF). Incidentally, this year, as a global movement is pressing for gender equality, the U.N.’s theme for this worldwide celebration is “Time is now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives.”
This free activity will feature keynote speakers who work for local organizations that empower women. Stephanie Dieudonne, from the International Institute of Connecticut, and Jessica Feighan, from the Center for Sexual Assault Crisis and Education, are among the special guests who will address the audience that night. Fairfield County-based musicians and poets will perform as well.
In many countries, the International Women’s Day is treated almost as a holiday. The origin of this tradition can be traced back from the early 20th century. Observed for the first time in the United States in 1909, it is the offspring of the garment workers strike that took place in New York City the year before by women rebuffing deplorable working conditions. In 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March.
The Ferguson Library South End Branch, which is located at 34 Woodland Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902, hosts throughout the year a variety of programs that promote cultural diversity.
