The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the arts and culture across the 15 towns in our region of coastal Fairfield County and each Wednesday issues our free E-Buzz newsletter with a selection of the hundreds of events posted to our website by our members.
Take in some history this weekend. Start off by celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Ridgefield Historical Society at its 1712 David Scott House on Sunset lane. Starting at 1pm, you can tour the house, see a quilt-making demonstration, enjoy live music, refreshments and much more.
Then at 2pm, the Westport Museum for History and Culture’s Nicole Carpenter will lead Art from the Beyond, a walking tour of the Greens Farms Lower Cemetery. She will discuss the 18th- and 19th-century superstitions around cemeteries and the dearly departed, tell the tale of Westport’s accused witches and show you the oldest gravestone in the burial ground. Learn what urns, willow trees and other artistic symbols on gravestones mean as you meander through the cemetery.
As for theatre, it can be quite eye-opening to witness live auditions. New Paradigm Theatre works closely with young people and they are opening their signature mentoring and audition event, So Ya Wanna Be a Broadway Star, “for ages 8 to adult” to everyone. Come and participate or just enjoy the Theatre’s auditions. It will be held outdoors Saturday 11am at Weston’s Emmanuel Church.
Want more theatre? Then try Saturday and Sunday at 4pm in Milford’s Eisenhower Park, where Milford Arts Council’s Eastbound Theatre presents Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town that tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover's Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens.
Want some music with your theatre? Saturday at 8pm, or Sunday at 2pm, try out Ridgefield’s ACT of CT, which is presenting one of Broadway’s longest-running hits, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE, a celebration of legendary songwriting team Leiber and Stoller, who virtually invented rock ’n’ roll. This high-energy, fast-paced show features 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded, including “Jailhouse Rock,” "Stand By Me,” “Yakety Yak,” “Hound Dog,” and many more.
Feel like strolling through an arts and crafts show? All day Saturday and Sunday, Stamford’s Bedford Street is being closed off for Arts & Crafts on Bedford, where you can shop one-of-a-kind handcrafted goods made by local and regional artists. Restaurants will have extended patio cafes and the Imagination Station in Latham Park will have entertainment for the kids.
For Saturday evening entertainment, Bridgeport’s The Klein Auditorium offers Elizardi Castro, one of the most innovative comedians around, with his show “Mira Que Nice!” Castro combines his Puerto Rican heritage with American culture to create a Spanglish riot of laughter and fun in all his shows. His one-man shows include "Made in Puerto Rico,” that ran Off-Broadway for seven sold out weeks.
And in Norwalk, Saturday night, The Wall Street Theater presents Internet sensation and RUSH Tribute band, YYNOT — the collaboration of award-winning guitarist/songwriter/producer, Billy Alexander and Florida-based virtuoso bassist, Tim Starace.
