November 5-7

The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the arts and culture across the 15 towns in our region of coastal Fairfield County and each Wednesday issues our free E-Buzz newsletter with a selection of the hundreds of events posted to our website by our members.

Start the weekend by living on the edge at the opening of Pushing the Boundaries: Donald Martiny + Amy Genser. On Friday at 5:30pm, Amy Simon Fine Art in Westport hosts an exhibit reception for an exhibit that runs through December 31st. Donald Martiny creates immediately frozen outsized brushstrokes that are made from his own movements, defined by the physicality of his body. Amy Genser’s paintings reflect her fascination with the flow of water, the shape of beehives, and the organic irregularity of plants, flowers, rock formations, barnacles, moss, and seaweed.

Then, on Saturday at 2:30pm Connect-Us Bridgeport presents C-U Onstage!, their annual community talent show featuring youth performers from Bridgeport. Connect Us is an organization that connects suburban and urban neighbors to improve the quality of outcomes for young people living in communities of concentrated poverty. Seeing is believing!

At 4pm, Westport's newest contemporary art gallery, The Contemporary Art Modern Project (CAMP Gallery), opens its November exhibition, An Autumnal Ode to Seasons Past,  featuring the works of New York City-based Nicaraguan artist Franck de las Mercedes. The opening reception includes live jazz by Chris Coogan and Linda Couturas from 5 to 7pm.

And don’t miss the special collaboration between The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra at 6 pm. It’s the live performance debut of the RSO Quartet, performing chamber music selected to accompany Hugo McCloud’s exhibition, From Where I Stand. During the performance, the musicians will elaborate on the connections between the music and the art, playing works by William Grant Still, uniquely “American” selections from Antonín Dvořák and Samuel Barber, and contemporary composer Kenji Bunch.

Missing live theatre? At 8pm, Norwalk’s Music Theatre of Connecticut opens its new musical, Falsettoland, written by William Finn and James Lapin with music and lyrics by William Finn. You will be taken on a journey with Marvin, a neurotic New Yorker and his lovable yet dysfunctional family as they prep for his son’s bar mitzvah.

Also at 8pm at The Ridgefield Playhouse, Arts Advisory board member Oscar-winner and recipient of more Academy Awards than any other living composer, Alan Menken treats Connecticut to a multimedia show: A Whole New World of Alan Menken -thirty years of hit songs, movies, and musicals – The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, and more! In this one-man show, the legendary storyteller sings some of his best-loved tunes, accompanying himself on the piano.

On Sunday at 1pm, meet painter Kelly Rossetti and photographer, Joanna Lentini at The Norwalk Art Space. These artists are featured in the current exhibition, Between Blurred Lines, and the conversation moderated by David Green of the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County is sure to be inspiring and intriguing.

It’s celebration time at Fairfield’s Art/Place Gallery (a non-profit, artist-run gallery that shares space with Fairfield Theater Company) on Sunday at 2pm. The 40th Anniversary Member Show opening reception will raise a class to the Gallery’s 40-Year Anniversary. It includes one wall of small work and varied sizes of work on the others, all in a variety of themes, sizes, and mediums. On view through January 2.

If you can’t make the reception, then take a peek at the exhibit right before you head into FTC’s The Warehouse for The FIXX and Fastball at 8pm.One of the most innovative bands to come out of the MTV era in the early 1980s, this band became a fixture on the American pop charts as one of many British New Wave bands that conquered the airwaves in the US at the time.
