On January 30th, straight-ahead jazz gets a refreshing and modern treatment when the Brubeck Brothers Quartet make their return to The Ridgefield Playhouse to celebrate 100 years of jazz legend and Connecticut local Dave Brubeck, as part of the Moffly Media Evening of Art, Wine & Jazz Series.
The Brubeck Brothers (Chris and Dan) performed and recorded with their father beginning in the 1970s, and in honor of a century of music, they developed this multimedia show that fuses music and storytelling to bring audiences on a journey through Dave Brubeck’s extraordinary life and career. The deliciously-abbreviated BBQ, led by Chris and Dan Brubeck on bass and drums respectively, alongside guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, is the rare combo that stretches the bounds of creativity and improvisational interplay while still honoring and elevating the traditions of jazz established by legends like their father. Underpinning the compositional acumen and the instrumental mastery is a degree of communication that is rare even among siblings, making each performance a unique and dynamic experience.
Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together since their earliest childhood days, with their first record cut back in 1966. It’s no wonder that they gravitated towards jazz given the music is in their DNA; their father Dave Brubeck was one of the most revered performers and composers in the history of the art form. Nor is it a surprise that the Brubeck Brothers Quartet loves to experiment with nonstandard time signatures, a musical twist that is encapsulated by Dave Brubeck’s most famous song, “Take Five.” But while their musical lineage is closely linked to their famous father and his legacy, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet is a powerful and dynamic collaborative in its own right, which frequently references styles beyond the borders of what’s typically known as “straight ahead jazz.”
As funk, blues and world music have stretched and blurred the definitions of jazz for the past 50 years, these influences are naturally integrated into the Brubeck Brothers Quartet’s nightly performances. It’s tradition with a twist, referencing the ever-expanding vocabulary of contemporary jazz music.
