DMV Express Office Opens in Stamford for License and ID Card Renewals

Beginning November 28, the Stamford DMV Express Office Will Be Open Every Monday Through Friday

Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner Michael Bzdyra today announced that beginning Wednesday, November 28, 2018, a new DMV Express office will open in Stamford, providing customers with increased opportunities to renew driver’s licenses and identification cards while expanding accessibility and convenience.

Located at 137 Henry Street, the office, which was previously open two days per week under the management of the DMV, will now be operated by The WorkPlace, Inc. and its days of operation will expand to five days per week every Monday through Friday.

Services provided at the Stamford DMV Express office include:

  • Renewals of verified driver’s licenses (U.S. citizens only)
  • Renewals of regular driver’s licenses (U.S. citizens only)
  • Renewals of non-U.S. citizen regular driver’s licenses
  • Renewals of verified identification cards (U.S. citizens only)
  • Renewals of regular identification cards (U.S. citizens only)
  • Renewals of non-U.S. citizen regular identification cards
  • Duplicate driver’s licenses, identification cards, and learner’s permits
  • Name changes on driver licenses, identification cards and learner’s permits

All customers seeking to conduct business at this location must schedule an appointment in advance. Appointments can be made online through the DMV’s website.

The opening of the Stamford DMV Express office follows the recent openings earlier this year of similar offices in Milford and West Haven, which are respectively operated by Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union and West Haven City Hall and have already served 25,000 customers. Plans are underway to open DMV Express offices in North Haven and Southington in the coming weeks, the details of which are forthcoming.

“This DMV Express office in Stamford, similar to the recently opened locations in Milford and West Haven, as well as the ones opening soon in North Haven and Southington, will continue our efforts to make renewals more convenient while at the same time reducing the strain on other DMV locations,” Governor Malloy said. “This public-private partnership is serving as a model for how we can work together to make sure Connecticut residents receive the best possible services.”

“The agency wants to spur innovation and create a network of convenient offices in New Haven and Fairfield counties, which are no longer served by AAA Northeast for DMV license and ID services,” Commissioner Bzdyra said. “Our customers in lower Fairfield County will certainly benefit from the new Stamford DMV Express because it will be open Monday through Friday with additional hours than what was previously available for license and ID card renewal services.”

“The WorkPlace looks forward to serving the residents of southwest Connecticut with expanded operations that increase convenience for DMV customers in the area,” Joe Carbone, President and CEO of The WorkPlace, said. “We appreciate the opportunity Commissioner Bzdyra has provided and are thankful for the tremendous support of his staff during the transition.”

DMV Express is a customer convenience-driven program designed to make services more available in New Haven and Fairfield Counties while also enhancing existing partner AAA Allied Group’s current locations elsewhere in the state. Last year, the DMV opened a public request-for-qualifications process to find third-party venders that could provide these services in the ongoing effort to create a network of convenient offices in New Haven and Fairfield Counties to replace those that are no longer being provided in the region by AAA Northeast. In northern areas of the state, those services continue to be provided by AAA Allied Group, which has offices in Avon, Cromwell, Enfield, Manchester, Old Saybrook, Waterford, and West Hartford.
