City of Stamford: The Works!

Recycling Center

Mayor David Martin announced the Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center will add an additional day of operations and be open every Friday beginning April 9. This will update the Recycling Center’s operational hours to Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 am to 2 pm.

"My budget proposal this year will fully restore service to the Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center as of July 1, but I am happy to work with our operations staff to immediately include this additional day of operations for our residents," said Mayor David Martin.

Mayor David Martin released a statement following President Joe Biden's remarks on Gun Violence Prevention earlier today:

“Every death from gun violence is a senseless tragedy reflecting the failure of our nation to assure the safety of our residents. In just the past 30 days, we’ve seen this failure result in the deaths of eight people in Georgia, 10 people in Colorado, and four in California — including a nine-year-old child. These tragedies are heartbreaking, but gun violence is a disease we know how to cure — it requires bold action and repeated commitment.

I commend President Biden for addressing this issue so early in his administration. His proposals include laws that have already been enacted in Stamford and Connecticut such as banning ghost guns and implementing “red flag” laws. We know these laws save lives. I support the measures he put forth, including requiring universal background checks, closing the gun show loophole reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, and re-enacting the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. As the President said, we have expressed enough ‘thoughts and prayers’ — our community and our nation is only made safer through action.

Stamford is the safest city in New England, and we take every action available to us to remove gun violence from our community.

As Mayor, I implemented an anonymous tip line to report illegal guns — coupled with other gun seizures — the police have removed hundreds of illegal guns from our community. We have removed even more guns through our gun buyback program. Early in 2019 we passed a local ordinance banning ‘ghost guns’ - weapons that can be sold in parts and assembled at a person’s home without serial numbers. Stamford’s local action helped inform state legislation, and I thank Governor Lamont for subsequently signing legislation to ban ‘ghost guns’ throughout our State. And we have supported statewide red flag laws, allowing our police to temporarily remove firearms from a person who may present as a danger to themselves or others.

Guns have been part of our country’s identity since its founding, but we should distinguish this history from the modern epidemic of gun violence. We have seen so many mass shootings that tell a similar story — an individual who should have never owned a weapon in the first place, used a gun to cause devastation in our communities. We know that strong gun safety legislation will help protect everyone and save many lives.

As your Mayor, I promise to do everything I can to keep our community safe.”
