Stamford History Center's Claudia Wolen Literally Puts Students On the Map

In May 2018, Stamford History Center debuted the interactive "Me on the Map" Program developed and presented by the Center's educational coordinator and Stamford Public School educator, Claudia Wolen. Wolen visited a Kindergarten class at Davenport Ridge Elementary School. With school now in session, "Me on the Map" will be offered again this year. Times and school locations are still to be determined. "Me on the Map" provides elementary school students with the opportunity to physically walk on a world map to learn geography and their relationship to various places. Other hands-on activities include making "Where I Live viewers", globe spinning and block stacking.

According to Wolen, "Through these activities, children see that they live in many places at the same time. And most of the places they live they share with others. We put the largest block on the floor. This block has the picture of The Milky Way galaxy on it. Next largest block stacked on top of the galaxy is our solar system. On top of that is our Earth. The blocks get gradually smaller as the children place North America, the United States, Connecticut, Stamford, our street, our house and finally the tiny block picturing “my room” on the very top."

The program will be available for all Kindergartners and first graders in the Stamford Public Schools from January to June 2019. While the History Center offers the program free of charge, donations are appreciated. The Stamford History Center, formerly the Stamford Historical Society, is located on 1508 High Ridge Road in North Stamford.
