From the Mayor's Office

  • Mayor David Martin  Stamford’s new Residential Food Scrap Recycling Program — providing residents an environmentally safe way to dispose of food scrap waste. Starting June 5, residents can bring their food scraps to the Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center for composting. As the program expands in the coming months, residents will be able to take a free compost made in the City’s onsite composter.

  • Mayor David Martin  this statement following today’s guilty verdict against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for his involvement in George Floyd’s death:
  • “Many have wondered if there can be true justice in America for African American men. The conviction of Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd shows that it is possible.  While we still have a long way to go, this case should reassure us that our country is moving in the right direction. We must continue to strive for that day when everyone is treated with respect and there is equal opportunity and justice for all.” 
  • This week is Pothole Week!
  • Residents are encouraged to report potholes to Fix It Stamford in preparation for extensive pothole repairs following the reopening of local asphalt plants for the Spring season.
  • Residents can report potholes (or other concerns that require action from City staff) by visiting www.stamfordct.gov/fixit.

Case Numbers

Today — April 22— Stamford has 15,384 confirmed cases. Last week — April 15  — Stamford had 15,108 confirmed cases. These numbers suggest Stamford has had 276 new cases in the past week, roughly 39 new cases per day on average. The City of Stamford has compiled a visualization of data up to April 20.

Vaccine Rollout

  • The State of Connecticut is using an age-based vaccination rollout.

  • Did you schedule at Stamford Health? Stamford Health has a policy of calling every resident who has their appointment canceled by weather. If you have not been called, please call their phone assist line at 203.276.7300.
  • Did you schedule at a site other than Stamford Health? Please call 877.918.2224 (or "211" if you are a Connecticut resident) to reschedule.

  • Governor Lamont and Attorney General William Tong warned Connecticut residents to be on alert for potential scams related to COVID-19 vaccines.
  • On April 13th, the City of Stamford launched a special vaccination clinic for Stamford's small business community. The clinic will go on for the next several weeks as it continues to serve Stamford's small business workforce.
  • The vaccines are being offered to any individual 18 years or older with an ID. Out of state, non-resident and undocumented employees are allowed to registered for clinics. Insurance is not required.

  • Free testing sites, no insurance necessary:
  • CIC Health. 845 Canal Street. Open Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 6:45 pm. Open Fridays from 8 am to 7:45 pm. Open Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Appointments are recommended, but some walk-ins are accepted. Schedule an appointment online. Results within 24-36 hours.
  • Sema4. Located in Stamford High School's Hillandale Avenue Parking lot every Wednesday from 3 pm to 7 pm. Saturday to Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm.
  • Community Health Center. Cove Island Park and Scalzi Park. Open every day, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Testing is first come, first serve.
  • Family Centers. 60 Palmer's Hill Road. Open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3pm. Pre-register online or walk-in with no appointment.
  • Other testing sites, generally covered by insurance (check with your provider):

  • CVS Health. 1938 W Main Street, 229 Hope Street and 969 High Ridge Road. Drive-through testing. Schedule an appointment online.

Community

  • SoundWaters today announced that it has received a $3 million leadership gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to support a new SoundWaters Harbor Center in Stamford’s Boccuzzi Park. Construction on the 12,100 square-foot building, which also includes beach restoration and public access to the water, is currently under way and is slated to be completed in mid-2022.
  • Governor Lamont announced he has scheduled Tuesday, April 27 as the date to hold a special election to fill a vacancy for state representative in the 145th Assembly District of the Connecticut House of Representatives — which represents portions of Stamford.
  • The seat became vacant on March 8 following the resignation of Patricia Billie Miller after she was elected to serve in the 27th State Senate District.

  • Acting through the Department of Housing (DOH), the State of Connecticut is developing the UniteCT Program. This program will provide rental and utility payment assistance to qualified Connecticut households financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The intention of UniteCT is to help stabilize Connecticut’s Rental Housing Market.

State & Federal

  • Governor Ned Lamont announced he is proposing to invest $103 million in funding that Connecticut is receiving from the American Rescue Plan Act to ensure that workers whose employment has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic have access to industry-aligned training programs that address the immediate hiring demands of employers and provide job seekers with employment opportunities.

  • Governor Ned Lamont, State Representative Sean Scanlon (D-Branford, Guilford), State Representative Holly Cheeseman (R-East Lyme, Salem), legislative leaders, the Connecticut AFL-CIO, and the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) announced details of a bipartisan proposal to restore the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and reduce taxes on the majority of Connecticut businesses.

Federal

  • The U.S. Federal Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Services (IRS) announced the federal income tax filing due date for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. The IRS will be providing formal guidance in the coming days.

Services & Schools

  • Washington Boulevard between Main Street and Tresser Boulevard will be closed 6:00 pm on Friday, April 23 and continue through the next days until terminating on Monday, April 26 at 6:00 am. There will be a signed detour route and travelers should seek alternative routes and expect delays in the area.
  • This closure is to allow for the removal of a building crane at 100 Tresser Boulevard used on construction for "The Smyth."
  • Construction is ongoing in Boccuzzi Park. The basketball court will be permanently closed for public use. The court will be used for construction lay down space, and then eventually removed during road construction. A temporary basketball court will be constructed on the west tennis court within 30 days of the beginning of the building work. During that time, the entire court area may be closed off until complete. The park will be open during construction.

  • Drainage on 3rd Street is in progress.

  • 2021 Scofieldtown Yard Recycling Center Monthly Events will begin on May 1 at 55 Rockrimmon Road from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.  
  • The City of Stamford and Stamford Health will host a virtual town hall on Thursday, May 13 from 7 pm to 7:30 pm.
  • Learn about the science of COVID-19 and vaccine safety from national, state and local experts.
