Karen Wilder Gifts Land to The Stamford Land Conservation Trust

Stamford, February 20, 2023:  The Stamford Land Conservation Trust (“SLCT”) is pleased to announce the acquisition of its 47th nature preserve, located on the corner of Scofieldtown and Chestnut Hill Roads in North Stamford.  The 5.2 acres are a combination of wetlands and forest.  This newest preserve is in proximity to the Chestnut Hill Bird Sanctuary over which the Land Trust holds a conservation easement from the City of Stamford.

In thanking Karen Wilder for her contribution to the Land Trust, SLCT President Harry Day, noted, “We are so very appreciative of the donation of this parcel and are pleased to fold the 5.2 acres into our stewarded properties.  Ensuring this land remains in its natural state means it will provide a home for a wide range of plant and animal species in perpetuity.  In addition, maintaining wetlands is important in helping to improve water quality and aiding water filtration in the region.”

Karen and Gene Wilder were happy to call Stamford home.  In a 1999 New York Times article, Gene, famous as an actor, comedian, writer, and filmmaker, was quoted as saying, ''I don't want to live anywhere else for the rest of my life.”  It’s fitting that the donated acres, adjacent to his beloved home, will be forever known as the Gene Wilder Preserve.  It’s an honor for the SLCT to acknowledge Gene’s legacy as well as his longtime involvement in the Stamford community.

About SLCT: The Stamford Land Conservation Trust was founded in 1972 to preserve the benefits of open space in Stamford by acquiring and managing land preserves throughout the city.  Together, these preserves enhance the livability and environmental sustainability of Stamford.  Today, through the efforts of its volunteers and donors, the SLCT protects approximately 480 acres, consisting of 47 preserves made up of 64 parcels, as well as 6 easements.  The SLCT is a member supported 501(c) (3) tax deductible organization funded entirely through its donors.  More information on the SLCT and its activities can be found at www.stamfordland.org
