Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Remix Market!
Three questions with Pamela Kindschuh, Manager of Remix Market.
Why did you start your business?
A for-profit, for-purpose business model, Remix Market was born as a major initiative by our sister company, The Junkluggers, to help fulfill our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) of keeping 100% of items hauled away out of landfills by 2025. Remix Market was launched from a grassroots team effort in 2013 and has grown from weekend garage sales into our current 10,000 square foot facility. Remix Market takes donated, gently used furniture; personal and household items; electronics and other items in search of a "second chance" for new purpose and then cleans, refinishes or refurbishes them, and offers them for sale at a tremendous value. Through our everyday, purpose driven business practices, and in conjunction with The Junkluggers, our mission is to enhance our lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling, and supporting local charities.
Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “I wish I could…”
...have a second, small curated boutique location featuring our artists in the workshop and other area artists that want to create new and innovative ideas with the furniture that we receive in. There are so many ideas out there to create custom pieces that fit your personality and your style. I think every home should have a piece that they created, their focal point that sets the tone for their home.
What is your best selling product/service?
Remix Market is a unique concept in the home furnishings and housewares marketplace — with an ever-changing inventory of unique, gently used items for sale. One of the most attractive features of our store is our on-site Refinishing Center which offers repainting, refinishing, refurbishing and restorative services for furniture purchased at our store or for customer’s own furniture. Many of the pieces that are rescued by The Junkluggers and brought to Remix Market already have a story and history. Their owners are often hesitant to part with these items. At Remix Market we appreciate the quality of vintage furniture, so we work hard to restore some of these pieces to their original condition, or refinish them with a new look. By recycling this furniture, we are not only keeping it out of a landfill, but also giving it a new life and continuing its story with a new family.
