Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Beth Madison Photography!

Four questions with Beth Madison, owner of Beth Madison Photography.

Why did you start your business?

Photography is my passion!  I actually started my first photography business when I was sixteen.  Although I worked in NYC as a copywriter, communications director and editor, I always continued studying and building my skill as a photographer, taking classes at ICP (International Center of Photography) and attending workshops and conferences.  In 2008, living back in Stamford, I decided to return to professional photography.  I specialize in both business and family photography.

I’m known for my headshots, both for business and social media.  I am skilled at capturing your real personality within the confines of the headshot.  I’m also well-known for my children, family and pet photography.

I believe strongly in the importance of photography.  For family photography, having photos that capture real, authentic emotions and connections with those we love is truly priceless.  It’s the photos that people grab when fleeing from a disaster.  For business photography, a great, outstanding headshot makes all the difference.  It shows the world that you take yourself seriously, that you are a force to be reckoned with.  What’s more, a headshot session with me is a relaxed, positive and self-affirming experience, one that my clients walk away from feeling great about themselves.

I truly believe in the value of creating beautiful, expressive, touching images that my clients will treasure forever.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “I wish I could…”

I wish I could show people why they need professional photography in a world where we all have a camera in our pockets.

People snap images on their iPhone all the time – and that’s great!  Capturing those moments, slapping a filter or meme overlay on them and posting them to Instagram is lots of fun.  But when it comes to those moments that are really important, you need more.

I wish I could sit down with parents and show them photo books and framed images I’ve created from family shoots.  The pictures that parents have taken of their kids themselves are sweet, but when they see what I’ve been able to produce, honestly, they get all misty.  I wish I could show them “watch me grow” albums I’ve created after photographing children for years.  I wish I could show them albums I’ve made after photographing family reunions or other events.

I wish I could sit down with every person and show them why they need professional headshots.  If you work, if you’re looking for work, if you’re an entrepreneur, if you’re starting out or switching fields or re-entering the workforce – you need an excellent headshot.  If you’re dating, you really need a good headshot.  If you’re in the creative fields – if you’re a musician or singer or artist or clothing designer, you need a great headshot.  Of course, actors and models know they need great headshots.

Your iPhone snapshots are fine for every day.  But no matter how great a person you are, we meet people and interact first online.  If you ever want to be noticed, to stand out, to begin to achieve your goals, you need professional photography.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My best selling products/services are my headshot sessions, and my family photography photo book and wall art.  My headshot session is popular because they are a fantastic value for the high quality of the product.  And my clients are blown away by the luxurious look and feel of the photobooks I produce from a family photoshoot.  Lay-flat photo books are a great way to enjoy lots of images from your shoot.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Camera Wholesalers on Summer Street is my go-to vendor here in Stamford.  When I was first getting started, they were invaluable in answering questions and providing guidance.  High Ridge Printing and Copy Center has also been an important partner in printing promotional material for my business and show booth.
