Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Nora's Ovenworks!

Four questions with Nora Brunnett, founder of Nora's Ovenworks.

Why did you start your business?

Nora's Ovenworks is a bakery with a twist. We do custom cakes, wedding cakes, specialty cakes, cookies and desserts. We also host birthday parties, series classes for kids, adult classes and camps. I really fell into the business and started different avenues within the business that I really enjoy. I love teaching my craft!

What is your best-selling product/service?

I would say the cupcakes and bars are most popular followed by our parties, classes, and camps.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I use a local distributor for many of my items, likes sugar flour and chocolates. Inter-County Bakers. And when I do parties I order my pizza from Westover Pizza. The owner Nicla is wonderful. I also order my chicken fingers and fries from the Wienery or Wedge Inn, both located in Stamford.

Nora's Ovenworks also started a Cloonan Middle School baking club this past year and hopes to continue in the fall. We also are looking forward to working with the Ferguson Library again and starting with the Boys and Girls Club and the Stamford Y.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Yes. I started recording my classes for online or zoom use and I am doing more virtual classes. I will be launching my "Sugar Works Subscription box" in 60 days. This product will include a lesson plan and tools for kids to use at home baking. My courses teach math science and art all rolled up into a twisted yummy treat.

Nora's Ovenworks is located at 2333 Summer Street in Stamford. Visit Nora's Ovenworks online here, and make sure to check out their Facebook and Twitter pages as well!
