Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT A Dash of Salt Catering!

Four questions with Jonathan Mathias, Chef, and owner of A Dash of Salt Catering.

Why did you start your business?

I wanted to create a food-centric family, nourishing the experience around eating. I was inspired to create this family myself with inspiring, uplifting, and flavourful dishes that cause a ripple effect bringing people together. Food is about flavor and family.

What is your best-selling product/service?

We've been seeing more requests for small events with COVID limitations still in place and plant-based food, incorporated into our traditional catering menus. More people are riding the "plant-based" wave, vegan and vegetarians alike... we host virtual vegan cooking demos and private cooking classes which have also been very popular during stay-at-home orders.

Now that the vaccine allows for larger events and group settings, we are getting an extremely high influx of wedding inquiries! It is such an exciting time to be back in action and serving our clients in the post-covid world to celebrate each other.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Vendors:

- Gilbertie’s Herb Garden
- Baldor Foods
- Double L Market
- The Flower Basket - Charles Case
- Cove Tent - Lorraine Arguto
- Sweet Cakes - Suzette in Black Rock/ Fairfield
- A Room For Paws Pet Resort

Nonprofits:

- Open Door Shelter
- Star CT

Have you “reimagined” your small business?

COVID required us to pivot a few times. We launched online ordering, third-party platforms, virtual events, and meal delivery which are all things we’ve always done; COVID caused an even higher demand. We noticed people wanted to maintain a busy schedule at home and either learn to cook or have delicious food delivered on a regular basis.

Jonathan would like to nominate Double L Market located in Westport - "They are SO underrated and do things differently which makes them the best. Big shoutout to the team at Double L Market!"
