Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Lizzy Zawy Public Relations!

Three questions with Lizzy Zawy, founder of Lizzy Zawy Public Relations.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I wanted to give a voice, energy, and presence to entrepreneurs, founders, brands, and businesses I believed in. I have a passion for people and their stories. I also saw a void in the market for the services I wanted to provide in our area.

The opportunity to work with a client who I have the pleasure of getting to know in-depth and seeing them shine while I’m their biggest cheerleader lights me up. My work requires creativity, a strategic edge, and thinking out of the box, so the dynamic nature of PR work excites me daily!

After a significant person in my life passed away, I devoted my time to making my business dream come true. I’m so happy I did!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I’d say that our local small business community ‘makes the world go round’ here and I use a variety of them! I’m a Stamford native and adore the long-standing businesses just as much as I enjoy seeking out new gems in the area. The coffee from Cafe Oolala, CFCF, and Turning Point Coffee fuels me! Rosie’s in New Canaan (thank me later for the muffins) and The Organic Market in Westport are my go-to’s for food made with love.

For a great green smoothie, Green & Tonic! The Original Pappas Pizza in downtown Stamford is my pizza secret. We are so lucky to have such great dining options in Fairfield County. For an amazing workout, Pure Barre studios, Chelsea Piers, or Mason Street Strength & Fitness are my go-to! Acme Signs Co. for super signage materials.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I’m interested in continuing to develop expertise in the nonprofit and social impact and social innovation sectors. I am excited to be able to share that with organizations. Another area that excites me is community building and I believe it’s the future of PR, businesses, society, and tech. Pivoting and being able to detect upcoming trends and opportunities is an entrepreneur’s job and it’s a fun ride.

Lizzy would love to nominate her friends at DMG for their outstanding marble + granite and service!
