Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT BabyQuip!
Four questions with Sandra Gordon BabyQuip Quality Provider and certified cleaner
Why did you start your business?
I started renting baby equipment through BabyQuip (a digital platform business similar to Airbnb and Uber) to grandparents and traveling parents because I wrote about baby products on my blog, BabyProductsMom.com. I'm a journalist and the author of Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, the 8th, 9th and 10th editions. I wanted to get more hands-on with products and discovered there's a need for rental baby gear.
What is your best-selling product/service?
A full-size crib is our most popular baby gear rental because that's what many babies are used to at home. And when the baby sleeps better when traveling, everyone does!
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
I am a huge fan of BuyBuyBaby. I'm a regular in the Stamford store, buying baby products to fulfill my orders. I'm thrilled with the convenience of having BuyBuyBaby nearby. I also love the Stamford Target for baby gear as well, especially for last-minute orders.
Have you "reimagined" your small business?
In 2020 during the pandemic, I added baby gear cleaning to my business, after being certified through BabyQuip's baby gear cleaning training program.
Cleaning strollers and car seats is a "dirty job," but it's really satisfying to see the before and after--and my customers' reaction. Everyone says: "It looks just like new." That's the goal.
