Statement on Chief Murtha’s Dismissal from Racial Bias Suit

The Stamford Advocate reported today United States District Court Judge Theodore Chuang dismissed Deputy Chief Murtha from the racial bias civil rights suit against the Prince George’s County Police Department. The following is a statement from Mayor David Martin:

“I recognize the concerns some board members and the public raised regarding my nominee’s inclusion in a lawsuit in Prince George’s County. Our search committee very carefully vetted the claims made against Deputy Chief Murtha in the lawsuit before I submitted my nomination. However, board members stated in an op-ed to the Stamford Advocate: ‘The federal courts are qualified to find the truth, and [Deputy Chief] Murtha deserves his day in court to defend himself and his department.’

On July 8, 2019, the United States District Court of the District of Maryland dismissed all claims against Deputy Chief Murtha from the lawsuit. The Court’s decision to dismiss the case against Deputy Chief Murtha should put to rest these concerns and allow the Board to move forward to approve my nomination. Deputy Chief Murtha will prove to be a tremendous asset to our outstanding Police Department.”
