Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons Budget Update

Last Wednesday night I presented my proposed budget to our local boards. Learn more by visiting here.

My budget supports my vision of creating a more inclusive, equitable, affordable, and vibrant City, while delivering a fiscally responsible budget that aims to ease the property tax burden on residents by mitigating the effects of the 2022 property revaluation.

  • Investing in our Public Schools: The budget I proposed makes record city capital investments to improve our school facilities because if our students don’t have safe, usable, and functional buildings – we cannot expect them to realize their full academic potential. And that is why we are already getting to work!

Just this week I am proud to have joined the Board of Finance when they approved my administration’s request for $150,000 in city resources to match the Board of Ed in order to install 200 air conditioner units. As I shared at the Board of Finance Meeting: I feel really that this is the bare minimum that we owe to our teachers and students and administrators to be able to learn in quality conditions and in temperatures that are bearable.

  • And my budget for this next fiscal year includes a proposed $91.4 million capital budget, most of which would be invested in school projects. This is nearly 65% more than this year’s budget. Learn more here

  • Exciting Assistance for Small Businesses: I am proud that my administration was able to secure American Rescue Plan resources to support small businesses in our city. The Stamford Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant will be open for applications on April 3 and will provide limited, one-time direct financial assistance to eligible Stamford for-profit businesses that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. More information can be found here.
  • Standing Together as a Community: I want to thank leaders from across our city who came together to make it clear that hate literature has no place in our community. Please see below the statement I shared:

“The City of Stamford has a zero tolerance for hate speech against any person or group, whether it is based on race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, country of origin, gender identity or any other affiliation, and we vehemently condemn this disturbing behavior in our community. Ensuring residents feel safe after this unsettling behavior is our top priority.”
