Stamford Police Investigate Multiple Fatality Vehicle Crash

The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating a multi-fatality motor vehicle crash that occurred on Canal St. just north of the junction with Ludlow St.

At approx.. 2:32 a.m. patrol officers were dispatched to the area for a loud crash and street lights being out. Upon arrival officers found a 2008 Nissan Altima had struck two utility poles and completely knocked over both of them. The Nissan came to rest after striking the second pole and had live electrical wires on the top of the vehicle.

Three of the six occupants were able to exit the vehicle; three were trapped in the vehicle.  Due to the wires being energized, SFRD had to wait for Eversource to de-energize the lines. Once the lines were de-energized, SFRD was able to remove two of the three occupants. The third occupant that was left in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five of the six occupants were all transported to Stamford Hospital by Stamford EMS. Three of them were transported in critical condition and two were in serious condition.

The initial investigation revealed that the Nissan was traveling S/B on Canal St at a high rate of speed and just south of Henry St the operator lost control. The vehicle struck the first pole, breaking it into several pieces, then continued until striking the second pole and coming to final rest. The second pole was also snapped in half.

The vehicle was being driven by Jerry Diaz, an 18 y.o. Stamford resident. The passenger that died on the scene was identified as 19 y.o. Stamford resident Kymoni Pollock. The passenger that died after being transported to Stamford Hospital was identified as 18 y.o. Stamford resident NiShawn Tolliver. Both Diaz, and another passenger identified as Amaiya Callahan, a 19 y.o. Stamford resident were transported to Stamford Hospital in critical condition. The remaining two passengers, 19 y.o. Erica Stephens and 20 y.o. Alontia Moore, both of Stamford, were transported to Stamford Hospital in serious condition.

At this time speed appears to have been a factor in this crash. The investigation is ongoing and continuing.
