STRATFORD – The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9460 has announced the times for this year's Memorial Day service and parade. The memorial ceremony will be held at Academy Hill on Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day) at 10:30 a.m. The annual parade will step off from Academy Hill and make its way up Main Street to Paradise Green beginning at Noon.
Parade organizer Dick Kennedy of the VFW and Mayor John Harkins said they were hopeful that moving up the start time would allow more people to attend and recognize our veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
"We really want people to keep in mind the true meaning of the day. Memorial Day is about memorializing those who didn't come home," said Kennedy.
"Memorial Day is about honoring our fallen heroes who fought to keep our country free. Barbecues and picnics are great, but we really must strive to keep in mind the reason for the holiday. I am hopeful an earlier start time can equate to added participation by the community," said Mayor Harkins.
